If your bank isn’t on the list of connections, you can still use it with Billfetch. Almost every bank and payment account lets you download a statement as a CSV file, and Billfetch can read it.
Start an import
You can start from any of these:
- Sources › Add connection › Bank statement (CSV) › Upload CSV.
- Drag a
.csvfile anywhere onto the Billfetch window. Statements open the import wizard; invoices and receipts go to your documents. - On a statement you’ve imported before, select New file on its card under Sources.
The wizard has two steps: Account and file, then Match columns and preview.
Step 1: Account and file
- Under Account, choose an existing account, or — New account — for a new one.
- For a new account, fill in Bank name and Account currency, and optionally an Account name (for example “USD receiving account”).
- Select Choose file, pick your CSV and select Continue to mapping.
Always pick the existing account when you upload the next statement for the same bank account. That’s how Billfetch knows which rows it has already seen.
Step 2: Match columns and preview
Recognised formats
Billfetch recognises CSV statements from these providers and maps the columns for you:
- Wise
- Monzo
- Starling
- Barclays
- Lloyds
- NatWest
- American Express
You’ll see Recognised format with the provider’s name. For some of these, Billfetch also asks you to check the preview carefully on your first import.
Any other bank
For other files, Billfetch detects the columns it can and asks you to check them. Set:
- Date column and Date format (for example
dd/MM/yyyy) - Description column
- Amount model — either Single signed column (payments out are negative) or Debit / credit columns (money out and money in in separate columns)
- Currency column (optional), or a Fixed currency if the file has none
- Counterparty column (optional)
- Decimal separator and Thousands separator, if your bank uses something other than the usual
The preview shows the first rows as Billfetch reads them, with a count of rows that are OK, have errors, were already imported or are new. Fix the mapping until the preview looks right.
To skip this next time, fill in Save mapping as profile (optional). You can then pick it under Saved profile.
Select Import. Billfetch reports how many rows were added, skipped and had errors.
Overlapping statements
Rows you’ve already imported into the same account are marked duplicate and skipped, so overlapping date ranges are safe. Wise statements go further and are also checked against your live Wise connection — see Connect Wise.
After the import
The account appears as a card under Sources. If you have more than one business, assign it to the right one. Payments out are then matched to your documents, and any without an invoice appear in This month under Missing document.
Tip: Download statements regularly, such as once a month before you close, so This month stays complete.
