Wise is one of the most common accounts for UK sellers and freelancers. Connecting it takes a couple of minutes, but there’s one thing to know: the connection brings in new transactions, and for earlier months you upload a statement.
Connect Wise
- In Wise, open Settings → API tokens and create a read-only token.
- In Billfetch, open Sources, select Add connection and choose Wise.
- Paste the token and select Connect Wise.
Billfetch checks the token and finds your balances. The token is stored encrypted, and it can only read — it can’t move money.
Why earlier months need a CSV
For UK and EU accounts, Wise doesn’t share transactions from before you connected. That’s a Wise rule, not a Billfetch setting. New transactions arrive from the day you connect; anything older has to come from a Wise statement.
So if you start using Billfetch partway through the year, add your earlier months like this:
- In Wise, download a statement in CSV format covering the months you need.
- In Billfetch, open Sources and find your Wise card.
- Select Earlier months: upload CSV.
- Under Account, leave — New account — selected, fill in the details and choose your file.
- Select Continue to mapping. Billfetch shows Recognised format: Wise — columns are mapped for you.
- Check the preview and select Import.
The statement appears as its own card under Sources, next to your Wise connection. If you have more than one business, make sure it’s assigned to the same one.
How duplicates are avoided
Statements and the live connection often overlap — for example, you connect Wise on the 10th and then upload a statement for the whole month. That’s fine.
Every Wise transaction carries its own Wise ID, and Billfetch uses that ID (together with the currency) to recognise it wherever it comes from:
- When you upload a Wise CSV, any transaction the Wise connection has already brought in is marked as duplicate in the preview and is not imported again.
- When the Wise connection later brings in a transaction you already imported from a CSV, it’s skipped.
- Uploading the same statement twice adds nothing.
Before you import, the preview tells you how many rows are new and how many were already imported. After the import, you’ll see how many were added and how many were skipped.
Currency conversions are handled correctly too: both sides of a conversion, such as the GBP and EUR legs, are kept.
Tip: To fill a gap later, upload another statement the same way. Overlapping dates are safe.
